Energy estimates and cavity interaction for a critical-exponent cavitation model

We consider the minimization of ́ Ωε |Du| dx in a perforated domain Ωε := Ω \ ⋃M i=1Bε(ai) of R, among maps u ∈ W (Ωε,R) that are incompressible (detDu ≡ 1), invertible, and satisfy a Dirichlet boundary condition u = g on ∂Ω. If the volume enclosed by g(∂Ω) is greater than |Ω|, any such deformation u is forced to map the small holes Bε(ai) onto macroscopically visible cavities (which do not disappear as ε → 0). We restrict our attention to the critical exponent p = n, where the energy required for cavitation is of the order of ∑M i=1 vi| log ε| and the model is suited, therefore, for an asymptotic analysis (v1, . . . , vM denote the volumes of the cavities). We obtain estimates for the “renormalized” energy 1 n ́ Ωε ∣∣∣ Du √ n−1 ∣∣∣p dx −∑i vi| log ε|, showing its dependence on the size and the shape of the cavities, on the initial distance between the cavitation points a1, . . . ,aM , and on the distance from these points to the outer boundary ∂Ω. Based on those estimates we conclude, for the case of two cavities, that either the cavities prefer to be spherical in shape and well separated, or to be very close to each other and appear as a single equivalent round cavity. This is in agreement with existing numerical simulations, and is reminiscent of the interaction between cavities in the mechanism of ductile fracture by void growth and coalescence.

Numerical Solution for Gate Induced Vibration Due to Under Flow Cavitation
Among the many force s to which hydraulic structures are exposed to, the forces induced by cavitation incident are of typical hydrodynamic unknown forces. The aim of this study is to define these forces as coupled fluid-structure interaction under two dynamic effects. The first dynamic effect which incorporates facilities for dealing with cavitation fluid is based on the appearance and bursting...
متن کاملFailure Prediction during uniaxial Superplastic Tension using Finite Element Method
Superplastic materials show a very high ductility. This is due to both peculiar process conditions and material intrinsic characteristics. However, a number of superplastic materials are subjected to cavitation during superplastic deformation. Evidently, extensive cavitation imposes significant limitations on their commercial application. The deformation and failure of superplastic sheet metals...
متن کاملNonlocal continuum solvation model with oscillating susceptibility kernels: A nonrigid cavity model
A nonlocal continuum theory of solvation is applied using an oscillating dielectric function with spatial dispersion. It is found that a convergent solution cannot be calculated using a model of a fixed solute cavity inside the solvent continuum. This is attributed to the fact that the dielectric oscillations appear as a result of coupling between polarization and density fluctuations, contradi...
متن کاملLennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory
By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT) based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...
متن کاملDrying-induced cavitation in a constrained hydrogel.
Cavitation can be often observed in soft materials. Most previous studies were focused on cavitation in an elastomer, which is under different mechanical loadings. In this paper, we investigate cavitation in a constrained hydrogel induced by drying. Taking account of surface tension and chemo-mechanics of gels, we calculate the free energy of the system as a function of cavity size. The free en...
